Wk_1_Case_Study.docx Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude Chamberlain College HIST405N – United States History Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude Slavery and indentured servitude are somet... hing long in the past, but it still tends to be a tender subject for families of those who lived it firsthand. While slavery and indentured servitude may seem like the same thing, they are quite different. One of these was typically entered at a persons free will in exchange for passage, room, board, and freedom dues; whereas the other was enslavement of someone who was forbidden to quit their service to another person and was treated like property. The institution of slavery is not a recent phenomenon (Corbell, Janssen, Lund, Pfannestiel, Waskiewicz, & Vickery, 2014). Many considered a significant starting point of slavery to be in 1619 when the privateer The White Lion brought 20 African slaves ashore to the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia (History.com Editors, 2020). Slavery was developed in the American colonies to relieve the manual labor from the settlers while continuing the growth of cash crops.A slave society was based on devolution of authority to the masters on the plantations (Morris, 1996). Numerous amounts of slaves died within their first year of work due to the new, developing diseases in the American colonies. From the southern rice plantations of Charles Town, South Carolina to the wharves of northern Boston, every colony had their form of slavery. Less harsh then the south. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
