This vast domain includes and is not limited to chiropractors, optometrists, dental offices, independent clinics, and several other fields; however, one key attribute of all small healthcare providers is that there are typically 1-30 employees (Chen & Benusa, 2017). With the continuously growing and evolving healthcare system technology and informatics have played a massive moving point in bettering patient health outcomes; although, patient outcomes have been positively affected by the development of information systems their is an increase in concern for patient confidentiality and privacy. The US government has played an influential role in addressing the concerns of the citizens. One attempt to address the concerns was by enacting The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to better protect patients and provide privacy. However, with the mass amount of media in the world of today violations and leaks are still of concern. Systematically conducting an analysis of HIPAA and a scenario in which it may fail will further understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of not only HIPAA but also information technologies.
