Having a process and understanding the importance of making critical acquisition or manufacturing decisions can be directly tied to profitability and health of a department or company. This paper will walk through a make-or-buy checklist as it applies to a choice of vendors and suppliers associated with an e-commerce business. Part 1: Make-or-Buy Analysis The acquisition or procurement process involved in making a decision of either developing and producing within a company (in-house) or using some other source (outsourcing) is the make-or-buy aspect of procurement (Gunasekaran & Ngai, 2012). In the structured process described by the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), the make-or-buy decision would commonly take place during the plan procurement management process of a project. During this planning stage, the predictions of what is needed to complete the project are documented. This is based on analyzing of what can be accomplished in-house and what requirements may be outsourced.
