This topic remains extremely controversial in America today because the consideration of deliberately killing a person results in both viewing sides of the topic giving cogent and complex arguments that deem their opinion the more appropriate one. After extensive research, I have concluded that capital punishment, or the death penalty, should be illegal in all 50 states of the United States due to its more harmful than helpful impact. Retributivism is a valid opposing view that is understood, but does not out-weigh the other multiple factors that disagree with capital punishment. My opinion has been formulated due to the increased cost of capital punishment, the violation it imposes on our eighth amendment, and its failure to deter crime in any way.
