This is often accompanied by an imbalance of electrodes such as sodium, chloride and potassium. “Sodium imbalances are particularly important in patients who need intensive care because both hypo- and hypernatremia are associated with increased mortality in these patients regardless of age, gender and diagnoses.” (Balcı et. al., 2013). Overall, age does not contribute to dehydration but however increases the risk for it to arise. Older adults are more susceptible to dehydration and alteration of electrolytes that can cause not only physical disabilities but mental as well. When dehydration goes untreated it can lead to hypovolemia and can cause the body to enter shock. If the body remains in shock for too long, the kidneys as well as other organs can be severely damaged. Therefore it is important to take initiative to provide treatment as soon as possible in order to maintain homeostasis and have success at treating metabolic discrepancies. In the end “electrolytes imbalances may be life-threating conditions” (Balcı et. al., 2013) therefore collecting a urine specific gravity and obtaining a basic metabolic panel is he. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
