This condition is identified as an acute, but a severe uncontrolled state of diabetes that is associated with ketoacidosis resulting from insulin deficiency. This is a life-threatening complication of diabetes that involves drastically high levels of hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis. If untreated, diabetic ketoacidosis can result in hypovolemic shock and death. DKA is a common cause of mortality with clients with type 1 diabetes (Smith, N. R. M. C., & Schub, T. B. (2018).
