Literature_Review_2_.docx Mental Illness and Defense Against Crime Capella University Abstract Many people have been found not guilty after committing crimes due to the insanity plea. Lawyers h... ave always based their arguments on the basis of psychological absence of a person while an individual is committing a crime. Instead of going to prison, majority end up to mental hospitals for treatment and then reenter the society despite the degree of crime they committed (Nair, A. M. S. 2020). For this reason, mental disorders have led to increased human costs over time since humans have used it as an excuse to defend themselves against crimes. It is an issue that has been difficult to solve in judicial systems since the context of committing crime requires individuals to be fully aware of their actions. Introduction I have always been very interested in the study of psychology. I recently decided that I needed a career change and enrolled in school again to help me accomplish that goal. In college I studied music and I will always be a musician at heart but upon graduating I entered the federal government and worked for the Department of Homeland security until I was badly injured on the job. Consequently, my injury did not allow me to work in the same capacity and I ended up having to resign my job assignment. I, then, taught music for the last 17 years but it was never my intension. The recent pandemic has inspired me to change my life to find more happiness.
