Homeless Homelessness is not a new issue in the United States, and it even dates back to the 16th century among the colonies. (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). People experiencing homelessness are stressed and have many health problems, including mental illness. Being homeless adds to the severity of physical and mental illness due to malnutrition, various diseases and infestations, alcoholism, drug use, and traumas (Committee on Health Care for Homeless People, & Institute of Medicine, 1988). The physical and mental illnesses can create a cycle where people can become homeless or, if already homeless, then remain homeless. Significance of the Problem In 2019, approximately 461,000 adults were homeless in the United States (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2020). The homeless are divided into two categories, homeless people who are sheltered and unsheltered homeless people who live in places that are not meant for people to live (Florida's Council on Homelessness, 2019). According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2019), in 2017, approximately 18% of adults in the United States suffer from mental illness. That is nearly 44 million adults.
