Unit_IV_Journal.docx FIR2303 Unit 4 Journal Columbia Southern University-FIR2303 Do I agree with the question asked for unit IV dealing with the simulated backdraft training? I believe this could... give a false understanding to a backdraft. I do not believe this is realistic, there are more factors to consider when dealing with backdraft conditions. My understanding of a backdraft is basically when the fire inside a room burns and uses all the available oxygen. All the material or fire load inside the room should be around its ignitable temperature. Once you introduce air back to the room, the fire produces pressure and turbulent flames, some call it a “fire explosion. Some of the different variables to consider when dealing with a backdraft are the obvious signs you can look for from the outside which include: smoke stained windows, pushing and pulling on the smoke around the doors, “puffing smoke coming from the roof top from any form of vent. Another variable to consider is the structure. Most modern-day homes are built more airtight which can increase the chance of a backdraft. Older homes usually are not built as airtight so the fire usually can vent quicker. I actually worked a call a few years ago where the homeowners went on vacation, they left a candle burning in the second-floor bathroom, well the candle caught the window curtain on fire. Luckily, they closed the door to the bathroom before they left so the fire burnt itself out by using all the available oxygen.
