Why do you think the architect(s) chose to copy the classical style? What kind of messages does that style convey? How is the building’s function (use) suited to the classical style? 87 words Permalink | Reply Re: Classic Inspirations in Modern Architecture by Mauro Cimellaro - Thursday, 18 April 2019, 11:17 AM4/23/2019 AHIST 1401 - AY2019-T4: Classic Inspirations in Modern Architecture https://my.uopeople.edu/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=208578 2/18 Why do you think the architect(s) chose to copy the classical style? The reasons why, in my opinion, the architects of the time decided to use the style a style of the past (or at least to draw inspiration from it), it was that in that historical period, one felt the need (sometimes induced) of buildings that gave a sense of stability and safety. In the Hellenistic period, less impressive buildings, such as shops and small houses, were not built in this style. However, other types of buildings, such as temples, government buildings and other oÞcial buildings, were the example of this impressive architectural style. They used the classic columns that we know today (styles followed one another over time - Ionic, Doric and Corinthian - maintaining a continuity). The main reason for using this style for architects at the time (like those of today) was to give value and grandeur to certain buildings, through the wise use of structural elements that gave a sense of grandeur. Another advantage of these constructions was their great solidity and stability. This is also a valid reason for choosing this style. What kind of messages does that style convey? Consistency, solidity and radiance seem to be the main message that this type of style wants to communicate. We can observe the classic style used in various monumental palaces. An example is the Lincoln Memorial. Here stands the large statue of Abe Lincoln in the center of a large hall. Around us we can see how the external walls are decorated with columns (in this case Doric) that go from one end of the room to the other. As mentioned above, we believe that, for this type of buildings, the stylistic choice is due to the need to convey a sense of greatness, importance and authority. Thus, as in ancient Greece, the style was used in government palaces and temples, even today the same principle holds true. How is the building's function (use) suited to the classical style?4/23/2019 AHIST 1401 - AY2019-T4: Classic Inspirations in Modern Architecture https://my.uopeople.edu/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=208578 3/18 We can say that the classic style is considered particularly eÞcient and durable. According to the MET: "the tight adherence of the stones was suÞcient to hold them in place without the use of mortar". Therefore, this way of building appears to be very convenient in many respects. Of course, progress has played its part. Just think of how enormously more complicated it was, in the Hellenistic age, to build, transport and erect columns of that size. In the 1900s we found much more functional solutions for all this. Word count: 421 References: Architecture in Ancient Greece. In The Metropolitan Museum of Art. You make an excellent point about the symbolic reference to safety and stability in Classic architecture. There is also, as you mention, a tendency to use columns as a way to reference the Classical past in Modern buildings. In many ways, the adaptation of Classical style in the Modern area is a way to carry the strength and sense of importance forward; implying something lasting and revered. There are a great many buildings in Washing D.C. that use similar style architecture.
