PSYC 290N Week 7 Graded Discussion Topic 1 Week 7: Physical & Cognitive Development in Late Adulthood As one enters retirement, the physical & cognitive changes of aging generally become... even more noticeable. What physical &/or cognitive issues do the older adults closest to you have to face? Can anything be done to postpone having to face such issues, or are they unavoidable? Answer: Time is victorious & aging inevitable, but the stereotypes of elderly adults being in poor health is overblown, in fact older adults do not have ailments that seriously impair their daily function (Boyd, 2015, p.441). The cause of many older adults chronic disease, are due to years of negligence. Without proper maintenance & health prevention in their younger years minor conditions become significant conditions, the most common chronic health conditions are hypertension & arthritis. My gr&mother suffers from both of these chronic ailments, her low physical activity & lack of proper dietary nutrition in her youth contributed to these ailments. Studies have shown physical exercise, is linked to longevity & also lower rates of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, gastrointestinal problems & arthritis (Boyd, 2015, p.444). Physical activity seem to be even more crucial for a person health in their older years rather than their younger, the body requires more maintenance in its twilight years & exercise & proper nutrients are needed in abundance to reach optimal health. What physical &/or cognitive issues do the older adults closest to you have to face? Can anything be done to postpone having to face such issues, or are they unavoidable? The graceful lethargic motions of an elderly person, is primary cause by dendritic loss at the neuronal level, this age related physical change effect my gr&mothers locomotion (Boyd, 2015, p.449). Everything slows down as you age, fine motor skills declines, even tasks that involves word skills. My gr&mother at the healthy age of 85 years young have given up a lot of activities requiring motor skills such climbing flight of steps & driving. Age-related slowing affects complex motor activities such as driving; adults over the age of 80 years old have more accidents per miles driven (Boyd, 2015, p.449). The common cause of motor vehicle accidents involving adults are, reduced range of motion in the neck, which often attributes to arthritis, contribute to automobile accidents & the decrease in reaction time affects elders’ ability to react quickly & appropriately when a vehicle or obstacle appears unexpectedly (Boyd, 2015, p.441). General slowing saps the body of its reaction time, causing the operation of a vehicle to be difficult & dangerous. Transportation as an elderly will be quite cumbersome as public transportation will be their only source of navigating to their destination. Reference: Boyd, D. & Bee, H. (2015).
