NR 506 Week 8 Reflection on Achievement of Outcomes Week 8: Reflection on Achievement of Outcomes The concepts that I learned throughout this eight weeks course have been extremely insigh... tful and interesting. Throughout this healthcare policy class, I was able to really focus on some of the issues that healthcare is facing today; issues such as the opioid crisis in the state of Florida and nationwide. I learned the importance of healthcare policy to implement change in the healthcare system and the power that nurses have to control public policy so they can better serve patients and communities. This new knowledge certainly gives me new perspective about how to make better decisions to influence better patient outcomes. The concepts I learned will help me be a better leader as I continue my journey as a new nurse practitioner. As state in the article titled: Crossing the Global Health Care Quality Chasm: A key Component of Universal Health Coverage, millions of people die every year from poor-quality care among low- and middle-income countries. These deaths and disabilities from poor quality care cost trillions of dollars annually. Nurse practitioners are essential to improving access to quality and cost effective care. Nurses in general have the moral responsibility to advocate to better health for their patients. In order to be a good leader, we must be good advocates. In regards to the article, nurse practitioners have the power to make a difference on a global basis and be a voice to influence health policy and advanced the nursing profession. Leadership and advocacy plays an important role to fully address global issues since nurse leaders can promote better quality, safe, efficient, cost effective care through the implementation of healthcare policy. Nurses can impact policymaking by joining healthcare organizations, practicing their right to vote, and reaching out to stakeholders that have a voice in policymaking. As a future family nurse practitioner, one valuable lesson that I gained in this course that I can apply in the future is my responsibility to influenced positive change in the nursing profession and the significance of participation in the healthcare system to have the role in forming and promoting health policy.
