NR 503 Week 8 Reflections Reflect back over the past 8 weeks and describe how the achievement of the course outcomes in this course have prepared you to meet the MSN program outcome #2 and the ... MSN Essential IV, and NP Competencies: Nurse Practitioner Core Competency (NONPF) #4 Dr. Costello and class, This course has taught me epidemiological concepts that provide the framework for the study of infectious diseases. Throughout the past eight weeks, we explored resources for epidemiological data, screening and prevention, emerging infectious and chronic diseases, and the role of the APN in using epidemiology to improve health outcomes. This course has helped reflect on the master’s essentials, the nurse practitioner’s core competencies, and program outcomes. MSN Program Outcome #2: Create a caring environment for achieving quality health outcomes In this course, we achieved the program outcome of creating a caring environment to achieve quality health outcomes. Throughout many of our discussion posts, specifically week 5, we considered the role of the APN in advising individuals about risk factors and steps to promote behavioral changes. The APN must be knowledgeable and apply national guidelines to educate individuals on the appropriate screening and preventative tools to prevent onset of disease and achieve optimal health outcomes. As have we learned throughout this course, the key to preventing chronic disease is healthy lifestyle behavior and early diagnosis and intervention. The benefits of early diagnosis encourage individuals to seek care early and improve their outcomes. Creating a caring environment through a trusting relationship between provider and patient will empower individuals to make health-promoting decisions. Understanding the importance of high- risk, culturally diverse populations to prevent disease and promote health helps to create a caring environment by providing culturally competent care (Darnell & Hickson, 2015). The APN must be cognizant in embracing cultural uniqueness of every individual and implement self-employment strategies to help the individual improve health behaviors. This course has taught us the importance of determining diseases that have high incidence and prevalence and focusing on preventative strategies that result in sustainable behavioral changes and thus, achieve quality health outcomes.
