Week 5 Final Paper- Climate Change GEN 499 General Education Capstone (ASSURED A) Climate Change Imagine a world where the Earth is slowly dying before our eyes. Thirty years from today researc... hers believe weather will make areas unlivable, and food production will fall one by one, rising oceans will make cities unhabitable, which will lead to panic and pandemonium (Weise, 2019). Deadly heat temperatures could make areas such as West Africa, South America, the Middle East, and South-East Asia unlivable cause mass human relocation (Weise, 2019). This issue and areas will continue to grow as the years pass by, still causing displacement for humans. Droughts, heatwaves, flooding, and storms will affect out food production (Weise, 2019). This will also create fear, and the world will change as we know it. Again, human displacement will be a problem again when the oceans rise and make our beloved cities unlivable. Mumbai, Canton, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok, and Manila are just a few predicted to be wiped off the map (Weise, 2019). All these together will cause people to go into survival mode and could lead to fighting over land, food, resources, water, and lead to wars across our world (Impacts, 2013). Research for correcting climate change should be a top priority since climate change affects every aspect of our lives, including human health, our environment, and food security (Climate Change, 2017). The Problem “Earth’s climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization, primarily as a result of human activities” (Wuebbles et al., 2017). Climate change is a very controversial topic, and many people go around and around with it instead of trying to find a way to prevent further damage to this earth. Vinay Bhargava, author of Global Issues for Global Citizens states, “We are all called, as responsible global citizens, to inform ourselves about these issues, to then inform others, and finally to get involved in seeking solutions” (2006). People need to understand what is happening and try to get a handle on climate change before it is too late. Earth's climate is currently changing quicker than any time throughout the entire existence of present-day development, mainly due to human exercises (Weise, 2019). Climate change has affected many impacts across many regions of the world today. Emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and land-use change are some of the biggest contributors to climate change (Wuebbles, 2017). This figure from the article Climate Change Indicators: Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions shows emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and several fluorinated gases from 1990 to 2010 worldwide: As you can see, all major greenhouse gases increased between 1990 and 2010. Carbon dioxide increased by 42% (Climate Change, 2017). Carbon dioxide accounts for more than half of total global emissions. Nitrous oxide emissions increased by 9%, emissions of methane increased by a whole 1%, and emissions of fluorinated gases doubled (Climate Change, 2017). All these greenhouse gases come from human activity. [Show More]
