Ethical and Legal Implications of Prescribing Drugs According to the Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC), (2012), the public rated nurses the highest trusted professionals amongst other profess... ionals in the United States. As an advanced practice nurse, we are held accountable for maintaining ethical and legal practices in order to preserve patient safety when treating and prescribing medications. It is important that we maintain current understanding of professional, legal, and ethical standards for advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Moreover, it is important to ensure that the treatment plans and administration prescribing of drugs is in accordance with the regulations of the state in which you practice (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). In this assignment, I will explore ethical and legal implications of a scenario and consider how to appropriately respond. Scenario: You see another nurse practitioner writing a prescription for her husband, who is not a patient of the nurse practitioner. The prescription is for a narcotic. You can’t decide whether or not to report the incident. Ethical and Legal Implications Treating a person with whom the prescriber has an intimate relationship can lead to serious consequences and potentially result in the loss of the right to practice (Arizona Board of Nursing (AZBN), 2015). Ideally, refraining from treating family and friends, as well as self- treatment, should be avoided. There are a few issues with the scenario that should be discussed.
