SOCS 350N Week 4 Discussion: Triggers - Graded A

Document Content and Description Below

SOCS 350N Week 4 Discussion: Triggers COMMON TRIGGERS I believe one of the triggers at work in the scenario You Decide Activity would be attitude. I believe that everyone except Larry was being ... inconsiderate & selfish. As the lecture stated triggers can be your appearance, attitude or your behavior & I believed their attitude was the trigger at play here. As far as my work place you can see all aspect of triggers at play there. You see nurses being cocky because they have a BSN compared to their coworkers who is a LPN. Even appearance, you see ones thinking because they are of a certain race they are entitled to act a certain way. Triggers are always at play around us. APPEARANCE TRIGGERS I can see where Tamara is coming from- The Islamic extremists have definitely put the world on edge. People have stereotyped all terrorists with wearing the traditional attire with the robes & head scarves, & visa versa anyone wearing these traditional clothing items with being a terrorist. When one considers it, historically it is not the normal attire that we have seen of the terrorists here in the US or even of the Boko Haram in Africa. The terrorists caught in the US are nearly always in street clothes, & the Boko Haram wear military BDU's. Which, I feel has lead to an increasing amount of prejudice towards anyone that has a certain skin tone, both in society & in the media. The whole situation is very tragic all the way around. CULTURES & ODORS When it comes to cultural backgrounds, they like to make sure that the smells aren't something that would shy away people from other cultures that enter their homes. For example, my Filipino culture has different smells from the many different foods they cook. My mom & dad cook a lot, but when I have friends over, they always warn me about the smell. They feel that sometimes it's a smell that they wouldn't be accustomed to so they make sure to cook beforeh& & get rid of the smell of the food before they come to visit. In most cases, my friends don't mind the smell of the food they cook, but my parents are still very picky on how our house smells. They have the windows open to let the smell out & they spray the house with air refreshers. My culture isn't very picky on smells since they have a variety of smells that they are already used to whether it's food smells or natural smells. Our culture is used to different types of smells. When it comes to things that aren't good smells & odors to us, we do what we can to get rid of it. I see that a lot in many other cultures as well since a lot of would prefer good odors as opposed to the bad odors & smells. DISCRIMMINATION BASED ON SKIN TONE & HEIGHT Hi professor Stewart, This is a pretty insightful article although it saddens my heart that this is still prevalent in America. This is not to say I am not aware that such a condition exists but I wish it did not. I am stating this because Ghanaians are usually short & dark in complexion. That being the case, it puts us at a disadvantage from get go at the negotiating table. One can only hope that, with time, people will be assessed & paid what is due them not based on the color of their skin but how competent & how knowledgeable they are at what they do. [Show More]
