MGT 438 Moral values essay FINAL The first moral value I will use in the business environment is courage. To me, courage is defined as the willingness to attempt and conquer difficult tasks as well... as skills. When I was only five years old, my parents decided that a divorce was necessary. It took courage for me to go to court and see them argue while I was so young. At times, I remember not wanting to be there at all. Thanks to my courage, I overcame the desire to leave and ultimately made the best out of a bad situation. Another example of my value of courage came years later during my first part time job when I was 17. Being a lifeguard, I had to jump into the water and save a struggling man from drowning. Learning about how dangerous people are when they are drowning made me reluctant as soon as I saw him, but without even thinking for an instant, I jumped in and ended up saving his life. Although I have been courageous many times in my life, there were times I was not when I should have been. Over winter break for example, I had a momentary lapse. An opportunity to take my final exam for my pilot’s license came up and I did’t have the courage to commit to taking it during that week. This was caused by a fear of failure. Failing the written test is costly and I didn’t want to take it because I was thinking about how much it would cost to retake it if I didn’t pass. In general, the fear of failing has caused me to act without courage. My second value is kindness. To me, this means supporting someone you aren’t required to in any way possible. Two examples of this come to mind. Last month after a hockey game, I ended up giving a random Grand Rapids man a ride home in the freezing weather. The other was during a shift at my valet company.
