"Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, was inspired by empowering music in the 1990's for people such as women along with others, such as the gay community. The lyrics to this song discusses self-empowerment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (the LGBT community), along with racial minorities. Lady Gaga explained how "Born This Way" was her freedom song, and the single was released on February 11, 2011. Jack Halberstam recently wrote a book (Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal), and in the opening pages, the author states Gaga is "a symbol for a new kind of feminism." Halberstam explained how Lady Gaga celebrates "the withering away of old social models of desire, gender, and sexuality." Also in this song Gaga recognizes multiple genders and contributed greatly to our current gender systems (Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal). Gaga’s song is mainly directed to gay rights, Whether or not anyone can actually be "born gay" is subject to interpretation, and is "hot debate." The argument states that if gays are "born this way", it should be okay, because it's something that can't be helped. In her song she mentions that “God makes no mistakes”, which is why the subject of gay rights is such a hot issue, because of the religious, and biblical aspects of being gay.
