BelmopanMGMT 1014 Case Study - Growing Leaders

Document Content and Description Below

Running head: CASE APPLICATION GROWING LEADERS 1 Summary As one of the four major functions of management, leading palsy a vital role in the management of any organization towards accomplishing the... overall mission. In order for leading to occur there must be leaders who can influence their team to working, hard both effectively and efficiently to achieve their goals within the organization (Robbins and Coulter, 2016). The Case Application - Growing Leaders looks at the 3M company and their success at developing great leaders and becoming one of the “Top 20 Leadership Companies”. George Buckley a former CEO of 3M company explains the importance of excellent leaders and gives his view on the difference between leaders and managers. It is his belief that leaders are cultivated to acquire skills and abilities necessary to lead a company to success. In his opinion the best leadership style he believed was best to be surrounded by individuals who are better than him, it helps in maintaining respectful and admirable relations between individuals within the organization. In the case Growing leaders, six attributes that leaders must possess, were outlined, attributes that were agreed upon by former CEO Jim McNerney and during the development of a leadership model for the company. The six attributes include the ability to: chart the courses; energize and inspire others; demonstrate ethics, integrity and compliance; deliver results; raise the bar; and innovate resourcefully. In cultivating a leader to possess these attributes the company has managed to maintain the label of great leadership companies and continue enforcing such attributes and cultivating excellent leaders. Growing Leaders 17-13. What do you think about Buckley’s statement that leaders and managers differ? Do you agree? Why or why not? I agree fully with the statement made by Buckley that leaders and managers are different. If we take a look at the definition of leader, we can see that leaders are persons who can influence others in achieving their goals (Robbins & Coulter, 2016). While managers are individuals that are responsible for the processes in getting activities completed efficiently with and through other individuals (Who Are Managers? 2015). If we make a comparison between both, leaders possess more interpersonal skills, inspire and motivate individuals to envision a reality and work towards it, while managers are more focused on the organization and getting individuals to do the job required, to achieve the goals. Leaders are individuals that can be cultivated and usually grow within the organization, while managers rely on their skills and experience to carry out their duties. We can also look at leaders as being individuals who are capable of building relationships within and outside the organization, while managers build processes and systems and tend to be more analytical of the systems structures and what it takes for goals to be achieved ((Who Are Managers? 2015). The difference exists in the way they both view what is needed to achieve the company’s overall mission. Whether they are focused on visions and goals depends on the roles they are undertaking, leaders or managers. Therefore, I can conclude that indeed leaders are different from managers as Burkley stated, however, a company must rely on the characteristics of both leaders and managers to be successful. An individual in charge of leading the organization should possess both qualities and in doing so, they can effectively and efficiently lead their organization into achieving success. [Show More]
