Particular attention is placed on the anticipation of risk, the mitigation of chronicity and the awareness of the potential for serious sequelae. The presentation of symptoms across populations will be understood to encompass patient experience, and the patient’s perception of illness, on the ability to achieve optimal clinical outcomes. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Biology 114 and 115 or their equivalents. Co-requisites: N602, 603, 604,605 Course Objectives: At the completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Describe the disease states that occur as a result of genetic or chromosomal aberrations as they present across the lifespan. 2. Articulate the effects of disease progression and symptom management within vulnerable and at-risk populations. 3. Categorize the effects of the environment, and access to healthcare on the presentation and progression of disease. 4. Anticipate common therapeutic modalities for the management of acute and chronic symptoms in common disease and illness. 5. List common pharmacological interventions for selected disease states with an emphasis on the important distinction of age, gender and the ability to pay. 6. Recognize the importance of prevention and patient-centered education in the management and progression of illness and on the ability to make end of life decisions. 7. Evaluate the risks associated with infectious disease and the potential for bioterrorism aggravated by rapid air travel and the movement of populations across borders. 8.
