Forensic Psychology and Ethical Implications PSY510 – Grand Canyon University August 16, 2017 MILITARY INTERROGATION Introduction The value of psychological testimony in matters of law enforc... ement and national security lies in its ability to provide legitimacy to the actions of law enforcement and military officers. Over the past few years, there has been a debate about whether psychologists should participate in military interrogation (Olson, Soldz, & Davis, 2008). Since the publication of the Psychological Ethics and National Security Report (PENS), the APA has since retracted from its initial stand regarding participation of psychologists in military interrogations (Olson et al., 2008). The ethical and moral responsibilities of psychologists promote integrity, professional responsibility, and respect for the rights and dignity of people (APA, 2017). Hence, participation of psychologists in military interrogations or any form of interrogation is in violation of the ethical code set by the APA and it undermines the principles of the profession as a whole. Code of Ethics The role of psychologists and psychiatrists as healthcare professionals focus on promoting health, healing, and wellbeing (Burton & Kagan, 2008). The code of ethics set by the APA promotes respect for human rights and dignity of persons when practicing their profession (APA, 2017). It also promotes psychologists and psychiatrists to promote the welfare of people with the goal of minimizing the harmful effects of their actions on people (Burton & Kagan, 2008). Finally, psychologists are required by the code of ethics to have social responsibility and never use their skills and their profession in activities that misuse their skills and competencies (Burton & Kagan, 2008). Over the past two decades, the War on Terror has influenced society in countless ways. The attacks on September 11 have forced policymakers to reconsider their strategies for national security.
