Document Content and Description Below

EOSC114 Homework, Winter 2018: Volcanoes (See footnote for an important copyright notice1) Introduction: (Why reading assignments? See the introduction of assignment 1.) Today we first read a short a... rticle in the prestigious journal Nature Geoscience. Then data cited in the article will be briefly considered, and data comparing volcanoes from a different article will be examined without reading that other article. Goals: After completing this assignment, you should be better able to: 1) Describe the kinds of data or observations that help estimate recurrence intervals and ejecta volumes of past very large volcanic eruptions. 2) Justify the need for further research regarding very large volcanic eruptions by referring to difficulties associated with obtaining the kinds of data or observations described in the previous goal. 3) Examine and interpret data in a citation, without worrying about details of the entire cited article. 4) Obtain various details about any volcano on Earth, from a database of Earth’s volcanoes. 5) Characterize this scientific reading in terms of its type, reliability of sources and the authors’ intent. 6) Characterize the claims made by authors in terms of arguments and various types of supporting evidence. Instructions 1) First skim all questions to find out what to expect 2) Find the article at http://www.nature.com.ezproxy.library.ubc.ca/ngeo/journal/v8/n4/full/ngeo2403.html. You may have to log into the library with your CWL, then search for the title “Tying Down Eruption Risk”. 3) Complete the worksheet during or after reading the article. 4) THEN, after you have completed the worksheet, go online to our course website to submit your work. a) Time available for online submission is limited. Do the reading & worksheet BEFORE going online. b) Online questions are automatically gradable versions of SOME of these worksheet questions. c) Each student will get a different sub-set of these questions. 5) Important notes a) Questions in this homework exercise are different from earlier versions of eosc114 homework1. b) THE MOST COMMON ERROR is not reading ONLINE questions carefully. Their order may differ from the work-sheet, answer options are randomized, AND each student gets a different subset of questions. Please work online carefully, with your worksheet beside you. c) Working with colleagues on homework is OK, but copying the work of others is cheating and will not help you succeed. See the Code of Conduct on our course’s Canvas website and UBC’s strict rules regarding academic integrity at http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/?tree=3,54,111,959.1 d) Note there may be one or more questions about this assignment in future tests, quizzes or exams. Step 1: Processes and predictions.  What is the location of Tambora, Sambawa Island, Indonesia? Enter the nearest whole number values with no decimals for LATITUDE [____-8________] degrees North, and LONGITUDE [____118______] degrees East. Use a negative number if latitude is South of the equator or if longitude is west of the meridian. This major eruption occurred in the year [____1815_____], and resulted in roughly [____60 000_______] direct fatalities. How many years was this prior to the article’s publication [___200___]? Finally, the article said this was probably [“similar to” / “smaller than” / “greater than”] the actual number of fatalities (choose one). 1 This worksheet copyright © 2018, F. Jones, L.
