Because of the delay in ability to complete my face-to-face clinical encounter as planned, I feel that there are many gaps in patient experiences. Due to the current pandemic and personally contracting the covid-19 virus, I was unable to begin my practicum at an actual clinical site, face-to-face with patients, until the end of week 7. Specifically, I have not encountered a patient requiring any kind of wound care such as laceration repair with sutures or staples. While I realize this may be an advanced skill, I have not even been able to observe such technique. I have also not been exposed to a critical patient whose acuity requires transfer to emergency services, such as severe shortness of breath or chest pain, for instance. My plan for the next four practicum courses to address the gap in patient experiences is to increase my clinical hours throughout the sessions to make up for the lost face-to-face clinical experience hours during this initial practicum course.
