HUM 111 Week 10 Assignment 2020 - Strayer University HUMANITIES 111 Week 1 Discussion Option A "Myths in Neolithic Cultures Around the Globe" Please respond to the following, using sources... under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: • Describe the functions of ancient myths, using examples from two (2) different neolithic cultures, and comment on whether myth is inherently fictional. Using modern examples, discuss ways modern belief systems, secular or religious, function for modern cultures in a similar fashion. Explore Neolithic societies and myths • Chapter 1 (pp. 6-8. 18-23, 29), myths in prehistory and early cultures • Ancient myths in regions around the globe at http://www.windows2universe.org/mythology/worldmap_new.html and http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/. My discussion post: -Olokun, the sea god of the Yoruba people, lives in a palace under the sea, with human and fish attendants. His name means "owner of the sea." Once, Olokun challenged the sky god, Olorun. The winner would be the god with the finest clothes. The people would decide the winner. Olorun sent his attendant, Chameleon to compete with Olokun. Chameleon matched whatever Olokun wore. Olokun finally gave up the challenge, and Olorun was declared the winner. While reading the myth about Olokun, instantaneously I thought of SpongeBob Square pants which is not only one of the most popular cartoons of all time but has to be one of the strangest concepts to ever be given the green light. SpongeBob is a character who lives under the sea. The two stories correlate -Pele is a fire goddess according to the people of Hawaii. She is a savage and wrathful divinity who is said to reside in the crater of the volcano Kilauea. She is considered responsible for all the eruptions that take place in Hawaii. It is said that one day Kamapua'a, a pig god of Hawaii mythology, tried to woo the fire goddess. Kamapua'a had the face and body of a pig, but his hands and feet were human. Pele covered him with insults, but Kamapua'a was strongly determined in the pursuit of Pele's love. As a result, the two deities found themselves involved in a fight. This myth kind of explains why Hawaii is such a "Hot Spot" and why they're so big on fire activity. Classmate Post: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The mummification process was a consequence of this belief because they preserved their bodies for use in the next life. It is no surprise that buried with the mummy were basic items they thought would come in handy in the next life such as food, furniture, clothing and ornaments. It was an expensive process and though it wasn't restricted to royalties, just a few managed to afford it. One's family had to be wealthy enough to procure a diener to mummify their loved one. The only restriction was purely economical. Peasants or those who were unable to afford mummification were buried in the sand while the rich were buried in tombs. The kings, Queens and other royalties were buried in the pyramids (Bunting & Christiana, 2000). Egyptians buried their kin in the desert. Tombs were painted with imagery of scenes from the deceased's life. Different corpses were buried in different positions, for royalties however, it was common to be buried with the arms crossed on the chest. To date that is the most popular burial position and not just in Egypt but world over. Egyptians initially placed bodies on bedlike structures, but started using caskets as graveyard robbing escalated. 2. Comparison with modern practices a) Similarities the Egyptian funerary practices bear a hoard of similarities with the present day practices in the same circumstances. In fact many historical artifacts suggest that most cultural practices in the many diverse cultural backgrounds existing in the world today, have borrowed significantly from Egypt; starting with the belief in an afterlife. We have always assumed that in the modern practice we have attributed belief in the latter only to people who have a religion, but the notion of "resting in peace" which is a concept embraced even by Atheists suggestions that there is a place of rest and one gets there by dying. We still dress our corpses with the best of their clothes to make them look their best in that next life. Because of the technological advancements our generations have borne testimony to, we in the modern day practice our own kind of mummification we refer to as taking the corpse to the morgue, but a keen look into it will reveal that the processes have the - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -dinarily great in size. Week 4 Discussion Option A "China and its Great Wall" Please respond to the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: • Describe two (2) specific aspects about the Great Wall of China, such as facts about its size, length, purposes, varied materials, labor force, and its phases of construction. Consider the various purposes of such a wall and its impact for good or bad, and compare the Chinese wall in this respect to some specific wall of more modern times. Explore China and Its Great Wall • Chapter 7 (pp. 216-218, 225), early phases, (pp. 617-618) later phase • Explore wall interactively at http://www.airpano.ru/files/China-Great-Wall/2-2 • Video at http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/discovery-atlas-china-revealed-the-great-wall.htm • UNESCO article at http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/438 • “China’s Wall Less Great in View from Space” article at http://www.nasa.gov/vision/space/workinginspace/great_wall.html My discussion post: The single most impressive aspect of the wall to me is the overall size. It is roughly 4,100 miles in length with an average height of 25'. Qin Shihuaangdi, the first emperor of China ordered his army to reconstruct, link, and augment walls on the northern frontier of China in order to form a continuous barrier to protect his newly founded Qin dynasty from northern Mongol "barbarians". I find the labor force to be unique as the famous Chinese general Meng Tian directed the project, and was said to have used a massive army of soldiers, convicts, and commoners as workers. Walls that resemble the Great Wall of China are built for 2 reasons to keep people in or to keep people out. I believe the Great Wall of China was built with good intentions as to protecting the many empires that lied within the walls over the years. I also have to wonder how the overall moral of the people building the wall would have been with such grueling conditions and so many deaths. I think there was a positive and a negative impact on the building of The Great Wall of China. - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - -- nd Italian culture almost ceased to be Christian in any honest to goodness sentiment the word. With the New Learning came in like manner those obscenities and unethical behaviors that depicted the rot of customary human headway. Italy was debased by the new effects that gushed in upon her, practically as Rome was contaminated by Grecian lavishness and provocativeness in the seasons of the missing the mark republic. An awesome piece of the written work of the time is extensively more terribly degenerate in tone than the composition of the season of customary wantonness. Classmate post: Emerita- When it came down to the school of athens this refers to the famous fresco. He was the man who painted in the Apostolic to which it is located in the Vatican City. This painting was painted in the 's, this is one of the four paintings that Fresco has done. He has done paintings all over. His paintings really stood out just like Michelangelo's paintings they both had great qualities in them. Fresco is someone who was like a Renaissance art and did get considered for a masterpiece from Raphael's art work. Fresco went on to have a series of paintings that were posted in Vatican City. His paintings were more like telling who the people really are as he painted his masterpieces. Within the paintings itself I feel as though that the paintings brings out much peace to people that live in these cities. In all honesty if I was living in these times I would have loved to help paint the paintings. Kenishia- Afternoon Emerita, After reading your post and looking at just how some of the work that was done I can agree with you on the fact the painting that Michelangelo did was just amazing and than just knowing just how him and Raphael had these great skills to produce such wonderful pieces of art for all the world to one day see and get and understanding as to what each artist was trying to tell within each painting I feel that these were stories some pieces straight from the Bible, and just from looking at the detail work of each was something I also would have like to have been a part of back in those times, with some of the colors that had been use you can clearly see in both painting from Michelangelo to Raphael these artist made sure to give great masterpieces. Nice work Kenishia My response: I too concur with Kenisha, that both Michelangelo and Raphael had incredible ability making stunning craftsmanship that impacted the world and emulated sacred scriptures. Both artists continue to become more and more popular Jesse, I don't know about wanting to live amid this era. Remember the Biblical stories were portrayed to assist a vast amount of individuals that were oblivious. I strongly believe that as time has passed and keep on passing there will be more innovative ways for people to comprehend the Biblical stories. Week 9 Discussion Option A "Reform" Please respond to the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: • Compare Erasmus and Luther in their attempts to bring about religious reform. Consider the role of the printing press and the actions of German princes in helping Luther to succeed. Next, identify one (1) example of the Protestant Reformation’s impact on visual arts. Pretend you are in a company or some other group in which you feel there is corruption. (Use a real incident if you wish). You have the option of remaining and working for reform from within, or of leaving and hoping to start or land something new. Describe your decision and the "dangers" of that decision, and describe the factors that you had to consider. Explore Reform • Chapter 17 (pp. 571-3), Erasmus; (pp. 573-7), Reformation and the princes; (pp. 570-1; 579-580), printing press; (pp. 587-591), visual arts; review Week 9 Music Folder My discussion post: Luther and Erasmus had a shared objective, and that was the renewal of the Roman Catholic Church. Still, such renewal was translated under alternate points of view, considering the comical inclination of Erasmus and his assault on the congregation utilizing parody instead of the straight character of Luther who felt traded off with the transformation receiving an alternate stance. In another hand, the fundamental part of the printing press was to spread quickly Luther's thoughts and furthermore make conceivable that customary individuals possess a duplicate of the Bible which can be contemplated/Interpreted all alone. The biggest effect of the Protestant's Reformation on visual expressions is the change of what pictures related. Religious symbolism addressed, and the market for it was lessening too. Numerous moderate Protestants regarded religious workmanship a transgression. Consequently, more specialists started concentrating on scenes, cycles and still lives. On the off chance that I worked for an organization, which may have been degenerate - whether it was the pioneers or the organization itself, I do trust I would instantly clear out. Despite which choice I would pick, it would not be a simple choice. Be that as it may, I don't think I could work at an association knowing shady dealings were going ahead away from plain view. The greatest danger of leaving, is, obviously, finding another profession. I could leave without work for a considerable length of time, months, or maybe years. Moreover, if the organization fears you may "spill" their privileged insights, you may fear for your life, contingent upon the seriousness of debasement. I would need to consider to what extent I have been at my employment, how terrible the wrongdoing is, and whether it felt like I could change the organization - or have enough support from my colleagues to in any event attempt. Classmate post: The printing press allowed for Luther's list of grievances to spread to all of Germany in a very short time. With the invention of printing press the protestants were able to print more propaganda posters to recruit followers and spread their beliefs. I would choose to stay in the company and help reform. I choose this because I am a natural born leader. I love to see the changes that can take place. The dangers of staying within are you are labeled with the corruption. You may also still lose you job and have to look for something new, but have a bad label attached to you name. My response: Susan, I too am a natural born leader, but there are some things I'd rather not be the leader of. I am a person of change and can adapt to my surroundings, but I don't think I could have stayed with a shady company. There are some things I do not want my name attached to. I would have to part ways and wish everyone the very best. As I like to say "different strokes for different folks!" Week 10 Discussion Option B "Counter-Reform and Mannerism" Please respond to the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: • Explain whether you prefer the representation of the Last Supper by Tintoretto, Veronese, or Leonardo da Vinci, identifying specific elements of the Mannerist and Renaissance artistic styles. Discuss whether you would have sided with Veronese or with Inquisition court, considering the issues of artistic freedom, right of the patron, and appropriate subject matter. Provide a rationale for your response. Describe a real modern situation where similar issues arise, like a controversial film, a professor with controversial views, a business owner expressing a religious opinion in public, a business owner who has an employee who is "just different", etc. Explore Counter-Reform and Mannerism • Chapter 20 (pp. 665-681), Mannerist art; (see also p. 591 in Chapter 17); review Week 10 Music folder • Tintoretto's Last Supper at http://www.wga.hu/html_m/t/tintoret/5_1580s/3lastsup.html (click on the image to enlarge); also at Fig. 20.9 on p. 674 • Tintoretto’s Last Supper, video, at http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/jacopo-tintorettos-last-supper.html • Chapter 14 (p. 491), Leonardo’s Last Supper (Fig. 14.25) • Leonardo’s Last Supper at http://www.philvaz.com/apologetics/LeonardoLastSupper.htm • Chapter 20 (pp. 678-680 with Fig. 20.16), "Last Supper" painting and Inquisition trial of the artist Veronese • Trial of Veronese at http://members.efn.org/~acd/Veronese.html My discussion post: Last Supper portrays the last feast that Jesus imparted to his pupils, which included founding the Holy Communion. Looking through the portrayals by Veronese, Tintoretto and Leonardo da Vinci, I lean toward the portrayal made by Tintoretto. In his portrayal, he had joined every one of the components of Renaissance. He has utilized independence as he has singled out every one of the supporters who are portrayed in a frontal scene sited parallel to the plane of the photo. Likewise, his concordat of painting is a progression of that of Leonardo. The focal point of the scenes possessed by hirelings clearing dishes from the table, for the need of visual precision. Furthermore, profundity was referent as Tintoretto utilized light originating from both Jesus and the translucent roof. Also, Tintoretto uses idiosyncrasy gadget, this is eminent for the way that his canvases identified with the European design of the nineteenth century. Likewise, its emotional scene had the capacity to connect with watchers in resuscitating and keeping the Catholic Church's convictions through the religious craftsmanship. - - - -- -- - - - - - - - - - - [Show More]
