Reflect on the concepts and practices you have learned in NR506 on healthcare systems, politics, and health policy. In addition, state how you will apply what you have learned in this course to your upcoming practicum experience. Dr. Myers and class, This class has opened my eyes so much on the concept of policymaking and the idea of patient advocacy on a large scale. I feel much more ownership and responsibility to create change for my community and the larger population. I want to truly make a difference in the global picture. The article that you asked us to read regarding physical inactivity and how it is a global health problem contributing to many health issues truly blew my mind (Kohl et al., 2012). I knew that obesity was a problem and I figured that people were not exercising and generally moving as much as they used to, but I did not realize how much of an issue it really was globally and especially how much it contributed to many health problems. In order to make informed decisions on nursing practice and patient outcomes on a global basis, we must surround ourselves with the most current evidence-based practice that there is. We do this by constant research, self-learning, and engaging in available conferences and educational opportunities. As much as possible, we need to participate in projects and research studies so that we are engaging in current research and feeling the ownership of making sure that we are doing everything possible for our patients, whether that be on a local level or a global level. I plan to stay aware of any potential opportunities for change in policy and then attempt to make contact with legislators and policymakers to try and make that change. I feel I was even more unaware of the ways we can bring about policy changes in healthcare as advanced practice nurses. I have to admit; politics is not one of my stronger subjects academically. I have always been much better in the sciences and art rather than anything political related. As advanced practice nurses, we need to be the voice, for our patients and the communities we serve. The article on the pandemic of physical inactivity is such a grave issue not only in our society but worldwide. I was aware it was a drastic issue in the United States but did not realize it was such a global healthcare problem. We have so many Americans that are so sedentary, and it is mostly technically related. Far too many individuals spend too much of their waking hours in front of electronic devices. Our children start at early ages and continue to have less and less social interaction and the decrease in physical activity. Our food sources are so highly processed, it is easier to find the quickest alternative to feeding our bodies, but we are not fueling our bodies properly. The result leads to diminished nutrition, energy, motivation, and drives to be active. The vicious cycle begins, and physical activity, as well as the increase in the health-related issues that are associated with it. Once health problems occur, the healthcare system is involved, and the costs incurred, and then the cost of healthcare costs increase (Kohl, Craig, Lambert, Inour, Alkandari, Leetonngin, and Kahlmeier, 2012). Nurses are highly influential in our communities, and in a broader sphere, we can influence change one step at a time with each patient, family member and community.
