NURS-6630: Approaches to Treatments Alzheimer’s disease Walden University Dr. Aaron Weiner, Professor Alzheimer’s disease Major Neurocognitive disorder due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a... severe disorder with a gradual onset and progression in cognitive impairment. There is an increased risk factor associated with age, with others ranging from incidents related to traumatic brain injury, cardiovascular risk factors, or one or more apolipoprotein gene E4 alleles (APOE4) that can be hereditary with an increase in the likelihood of developing the disease, although very rare (Hategan & Xiong, 2018). The prevalence rate of AD is steadily increasing due to the proportion of individuals 65 years and older, with AD being the most common neurodegenerative disorder and the sixth most common cause of death (Apostolova, 2016). Additionally, the pathology associated with Alzheimer Disease is assumed to result from overproduction and impairment in the clearance of β-amyloid (Ferreira-Vieira, Guimaraes, Silvia, & Ribeiro, 2016). The two hallmarks of AD associated with neuro-pathophysiological signs are intracellular neurofibrillary tangles and beta-amyloid plaques in brain blood vessels (Ferreira-Vieira, Guimaraes, Silvia, & Ribeiro, 2016). Additionally, acetylcholine (Ach) has a vital role in the process of cognition, in which the cholinergic system is considered an important factor in AD (Ferreira-Vieira, Guimaraes, Silvia, & Ribeiro, 2016).
