Course Description This course intends to develop critical employability skills such as teamwork, leadership, project management, communication skills and intercultural understanding, and will focus students’ learning on topics related to interactions with others in personal, educational and professional contexts. Students will engage in collaborative and dynamic learning activities involving direct and practical application of the content/skills critical to professional success. They will explore the practice and impact of leadership, negotiations and teamwork in organizations and communities. These practices will be examined in a variety of settings as described in both popular and academic writings. Learning activities will be directed toward developing leadership for exceptional performance, obtaining commitment to goals and standards, negotiating and resolving conflict, inter-cultural communications, ethical practice, and relating with others in team environments. 4. Learning Outcomes On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Recognize a variety of leadership theories and models. 2. Demonstrate the ability to use theories in the practice of leadership. 3. Cultivate a sense of self-awareness through identifying a leadership vision, mission, style and values. 4. Examine their own and others' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations as leaders. 5. Exhibit knowledge and awareness of diversity around identities, cultures, and society. 6. Demonstrate communication skills and the ability to interrelate with others. 7. Demonstrate an understanding of group dynamics and effective teamwork. 8. Illustrate effective verbal and written communication skills. 9. Distinguish ways to adjust one’s leadership style appropriate to the situation. 10.Display the critical thinking skills and abilities to lead others toward common goals. 5. Course Design The course design includes the following: lectures and relevant videos; participation in in-class activities and discussions; experiential exercises and hands-on learning activities. Students are expected to attend all classes to fully benefit from the course. There is also a weekly online discussion component that students are expected to complete in Blackboard. There is also a service learning component to the course, where students will have to manage a group project outside of class time. In addition to the readings from the textbook, students will be expected to read assigned case studies and some additional readings and videos. [Show More]
