COM 101 Exam 1 Study Guide Chapter 1 Why study communication?  7 th most popular  helps maintain healthy and lasting relationships  manage conflicts & more engaged citizen  develop... stronger critical thinking skills Define and differentiate the three models of communication: linear, interactive and transactional.  Linear: o portrays communication as something that one person presents to another, flows in one direction, has 7 elements.  Interactive: o Recognizes communication as a two-way street, more in depth process of communication. o Adds feedback in as a factor, flows from the receiver back to the sender. o Example: sending a friend next to you a text message and you sending one back.  Transactional: o Recognizes communication as a continuous action, sender and receiver are simultaneously sending and receiving messages. o This model is dynamic, sender and receiver are always changing/adapting their messages. o Adds environment: includes physical location, personal experiences, cultural backgrounds=ADDS CONTEXT o Example: two people having dinner together in a restaurant. Describe the seven elements of the linear model: source, encoding, message, channel, decoding, receiver and noise. Provide an example for each.  Source: the speaker formulates an idea, constructs the message, then successfully expresses the idea.  Encoding: the speaker translates his/her own thoughts/ideas into words, taking an abstract idea and giving it meaning through symbols.
