Chapter 13 Historical Thinking Discuss the specific attempts at compromise between the North and the South during the 1850s and their relative success. Explain the factors that led to the increas... ingly emotional debate over the extension of slavery into the territories. Evaluate the legitimacy of the concept of Manifest Destiny and the means by which the United States acquired territory during the period. . 2. Answer a-c California wanted to enter the Union as a free state, however, this would have upset the balance of free/slave states in Congress, leading to the Compromise of 1850, which admitted California as a free state, and allowed for other territories to decide whether they wanted to enter as free or slave. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 allowed for people living within the territories to decide for themselves whether to be slave or free. John Brown attacked Harpers Ferry in Virginia and attempted to begin an all-out slave revolt. This served to increase the South’s variness that the North was out to get them and greatly increased sectional tensions. 3. Answer a-c The publishing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin provided people in the North with a realistic view of what slavery truly was. This increased sectional tensions because people in the South said the book was full of lies, and the book further exposed the horrors of slavery.b. Briefly explain how the historical development you . The North was outraged by the publishing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Some in the South claimed the work was utterly false, while some went so far as to label it as criminal and slanderous. Economic: When taxes were imposed on all of the states by the federal government, the South felt as if they were being directly targeted and threatened to secede. This led to the conflict in which Andrew Jackson had to send federal troops to quiet the situation, but the idea of secession was now in the South’s head. Analyze the impact of the Civil War on Northern and Southern society economically and politically. 2. Answer a-c Slavery was outlawed and the entire southern economy was destroyed. With everything destroyed and almost no money to finance reconstruction, the South still remained largely agricultural and continued to produce cash crops for either northern factories or for export. Slaves were emancipated, but the hatred for African Americans did not decrease; rather it increased. White people in the South gained a newfound hatred for black people and the Ku Klux Klan got it’s start. Compare and contrast the congressional and the presidential Reconstruction plans. ● President Johnson wanted to allow the South to reenter the Union, but only after they had rewritten their state constitutions, paid off war debts, repealed secession, and ratified the 13th amendment. Johnson also wanted to deny former slaves the right to vote (which doesn’t really make sense if he wants all of the states to ratify the 13th amendment). The congressional plan for reconstruction, on the other hand, was much more lenient on the south, but provided for much more freedoms given to the blacks. Analyze the economic, political, and social methods used to create and maintain secondclass citizenship for African Americans. ● Under Jim Crow laws, blacks were not allowed to ride in the same train car as whites, use the same bathroom as whites, etc. Some states passed laws which stated that it was illegal for a person to marry anyone of a different race than themselves. “Black Codes” placed taxes on blacks who tried to pursue careers outside of agriculture, restricted the abilities of blacks and own land and guns, and allowed the children of “unfit” aka black parents to be apprenticed to previous slave masters. In many ways it was a continuation of slavery. ● The term “New South” was a term developed by an Atlanta newspaper publisher to distinguish the region from its pre-Civil War self. Supporters of the idea of a New South wanted to embrace racial harmony as well as urban industrialization. The idea of a New South was extremely successful in the long term. Directly after the Civil War, it took many years for the South to rebuild, but today the South boasts many global companies and large urban areas. [Show More]
