Mortality •Death rate from 1999 through 2002 • Decreased by 42% among African-American children less than 4 years of age •Mortality rate from 1999 through 2002 decreased by: • 68% at age 0 through 3 years; • 39% at age 4 through 9 years; and • 24% at age 10 through 14 years. Economic Costs – medical expenses • $11,702 average for children with Medicaid coverage • $14,772 for children with employer-sponsored insurance. • About 40% of both groups had at least one hospital stay • SCD is a major public health concern. • SCD Averaged 75,000 hospitalizations (1989-1993) in the US • Costs approximately $475 million. Image source: www.substanciactiva.com IMPACT OF SICKLE CELL ANEMIA TO THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM Frequent Hospitalizations for Sickle Cell Anemia Patients • Hospitalizations increased among adults in 2004 was $83,149. • Total hospital costs for hospitalizations - $488 million. • 66% of hospitalizations - Adults ages 18-44 • Three ED visits a year, due to painful episodes. • 66% were paid by Medicaid • 13% were paid by Medicare Image source: www.en.wikipedia.org THE IMPACT OF SICKLE CELL ANEMIA IN CHILDHOOD • Children show symptoms during the first year of life • Appear tired and pale due to anemia • Yellowing (jaundice) of the skin, mouth, eyes. • Pain crisis usually to chest, arms and legs. • Chronic chest syndrome • Sickle cells engorge together • Block the flow of oxygen in lung vessels. • Sudden occurrence • Symptoms resemble pneumonia • fever, violent coughs and persistent pain Image source: www.mochamanual.com IMPACT OF SICKLE CELL ANEMIA IN ADULTS • Adult cases are rare; mostly affects children. • Cases mostly due to inadequate childhood treatment. • Adult hospitalizations indicative of poor healthcare in childhood • Same symptoms in adulthood • Fatigue, jaundice, painful swelling, acute pain crisis • Acute pain is triggered by: • Illness, stress, dehydration, rapid temperature changes • Treatment in adulthood is difficult • Most hematologists specialize in children [Show More]
