Structure and functions of placenta • Metabolic function (Respiration, Nutrition, Excreti... on, Storage) • Endocrine gland function (Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), Human chorionic somatomamotropin (hCS), Progesterone, Maternal Estrogens) • Transport 2. Amniotic fluid (sources, functions) • Amnion and Chorion – the two fetal membranes • Composition • Production of fluid (lungs- 300 to 400 ml per day; urine – 800-1000ml per day) • Fluid removal (fetal swallowing- 500-1000ml per day, fetal membranes- 200-300 ml/day) • Functions: cushioning, thermoregulation, maintenance of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, facilitates fetal movement, barrier to infection, fetal lungs development, prevents membranes from adhering to the fetus. • The abnormalities: oligohydramnios and polyhydramnios Chapter 2 1.
