Document Content and Description Below

Coronado High School, Henderson SCIENCE 101 4.1.5 Explore: Voyager Space Probes Exploration Physics Sem 1 Points Possible: 25 In this practice, you will apply what you have learned in the lesson.... Answer the questions below. Submit this to your teacher when you are done. 1. Use this link to answer questions about the Voyager mission. (13 points) Mission Overview a. Describe where Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are now in relation to our solar system. Note: The heliosphere is a distant region around the Sun, in which interstellar space begins. (2 points) Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are in interstellar space, in between stars and in the heliosphere. b. Describe the objective of the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM). (2 points) To extend the exploration of the solar system past the Sun’s sphere of influence. c. Under the heading "Mission" at the top of the page, click the "Science" link. Read about the science investigation teams, and list two investigations that are currently under way. (2 points) 1. Magnetic Field Investigation (MAG) – evaluates strength of the Sun’s magnetic field 2. Plasma Investigation (PLS) - evaluates strength of radio emissions at heliopause d. Click the heading "News" at the top of the page. Then, click the article titled "Probes Suggest Magnet Bubbles At Solar System Edge." i. In your own words, describe the Sun's magnetic field at the edge of the solar system. (2 points) ii. Why is it important to understand the structure of the Sun's magnetic field? List two reasons. (2 points) e. Go back to the "Mission Overview" page. Click on "More Facts" at the bottom of the page. Choose the fact that you find most interesting. Describe it and explain why you find it interesting. (3 points) 2. Use this article about how the Voyager probes are entering interstellar space to answer the following questions. (8 points) Voyager Probes Set to Enter Interstellar Space a. Read Ed Stone's list of things the Voyager probes discovered and describe two of them. What reason does Stone give for why the discoveries are important? (3 points) b. In your own words, use Stone's analogy of a kitchen sink to describe the solar wind. (2 points) c. What is the heliosphere made of? What might make it hard for the Voyager probes to get out of the heliosphere? (3 points) 3. Use this link about the distance the Voyager probes have to travel in space to answer the following questions. (4 points) a. List the three scientific breakthroughs that must occur to make interstellar travel quick and comfortable. Why are these necessary? (2 points) b. How long does it take light to get to our nearest star, Proxima Centauri? How long would a Voyager probe take to get there at its current speed? (2 points) [Show More]
