HUMN-303 Week 6 Assignment: Art Production and Presentation (graded) Week 6 Art Production and Presentation Oil on canvas, 28½” × 36¼”. Acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest... . (472.1941). Saint-Rémy, where van Gogh painted this work, lies at the foot of a small range of moun- tains between Arles and Aix-en-Provence. This part of France is plagued in the winter months by the mistral, strong winds that blow day after day out of the Alps down the Rhone River valley. The furious swirls of van Gogh’s sky and the blowing cypress trees sug- gest that he might be representing this wind known to drive people mad, in contrast to the harmonies of the painting’s color scheme. I am a huge fan of Vincent Van Gogh in general and particularly became fond of his Starry Night which helped give me the inspiration for completing a piece of art that had been a blank canvas until now. While I’m no Van Gogh I do have a little experience with painting and pastels. I am born and raised in Chicago and this along with liking Starry Night helped to form the work of art you see on the right. Van Gogh’s Starry Night is a depiction of the view from his room when he was at an asylum after checking himself in shortly after chopping off some of his ear. Mine was a compressed view of the Chicago skyline from a distance but the thought origi- nated from when I was at a dinner on a cruise with my fiancé and the view at night of Chicago was one of the most beautiful I had ever seen. It was a full moon and every single star out was clear as day which is rare for being in the city. I named my piece “City View” as that’s what it is and the inspiration behind it. Chicago is known as the windy city and upon completion of my piece and writing this reflection and viewing both pieces of art I have a greater appreciation for mine. I jokingly tell myself “this is the present day Starry Night.. Chicago style”. If I had to put this into one classification of movement I would have to say it would be a part of the Realist one.
