ENGLISH 123 MOCK IO 2020 This IO is based on the literary text Little Red Cap by Carol Ann Duffy and a non-literary advertisement of Liz Donnelly. The global issue is an exploration of lack of prof... essional opportunities for women, compared to men. Little Red Cap" is a poem published in Duffys 1999 collection of poetry titled The World's Wife. The book consists of poems that are based on old stories and tales which she reshapes in terms of modern-day culture. Duffy is known for her trait to take previous stories, tales, etc. and change them into her own. The poem Little Red Cap is an interpretation of Duffy. The piece explains her first love, and venture into adulthood. The relationship between Little Red Cap and the wolf represents Duffy's relationship with poet Adrian Henri. Little Red Cap falls in love with the Wolf at age 16 "i made quite sure he spotted me, sweet sixteen", the same age Duffy and Henri met at. The poem describes how in their 10 year relationship Little Red Cap sacrificed so much just to be at par with the wolf which explains how much longer it takes women to be recognised in almost every field "but then I was young - and it took ten years". As pronounced in her poem, the two shared a sexual relationship, and were inspirations for their writings. However only Adrian’s writing was recognised and Duffy’s was consumed. Duffy successfully transforms the traditional perception of the character of Little Red Riding Hood to fit the image of women in todays’ worlds that is one of her strong traits with regard to her other works of Worlds Wife. The title of the poem itself suggests the modern transformation and gender reversal of the old traditional fairytale because of the use of cap and not hood, a piece of attire that is associated with men, therefore she emasculates the protagonist through a simple depiction of “male” attire. Duffy in her - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Similarly in Liz Donnelly's advertisement, after thorough analysis one can see the woman is defying society and makes a statement which shows that she has an equal right like any man does to get in job, regardless of the field. The texts further enlighten viewers as the global issue is still prevalent in every field. The International Labour Organization (ILO) report found that 1.3 billion women were in work in 2018, compared with two billion men – a less than two per cent improvement in the last 27 years. women’s pay is 20 per cent lower than men’s, as a global average.Even in job categories, such as child care, that are predominantly occupied by women, they still only earn about 95 percent of men's wages for performing the same jobs.Women must work on average an additional 44 days to earn the same annual salary as their male counterparts. However The Equal Pay Act of 1963 made it a federal requirement that pay scales for identical work be the same regardless of whether the employee doing the labor is male or female. While progress has been made toward pay parity between the sexes over the past 55 years, the Institute for Women's Policy Research estimates that it will not be reached until 2059. However, it is because of people like Duffy and Donnelly who weren’t afraid to question the status quo that women have greater opportunities today.
