Sociological Imagination: Perspective on Domestic Violence Chamberlain University College of Nursing SOCS 185 Introduction Dome... stic violence involves abuse or violence by someone against another person in a familial or intimate relationship such as a spouse or a family member. Domestic violence is not discriminatory and can occur in any race, social class, age group, and gender. According to the National Domestic Violence Statistics, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience severe physical abuse by an intimate partner. In the United States, 1 in 10 women is raped by an intimate partner in their lifetime (SafeHorizon, 2020). From a sociological perspective, domestic violence is a worldwide issue characterized by a recent history of rapid social change in institutional policy and practice. There is a lot of controversy about the nature of domestic violence, with suggestions that women and men are equally likely to perpetrate serious violence against their partners. Research has shown that women find it more difficult to leave violent relationships due to threats of future violence, lack of social and financial support, and inadequate responses to resources to receive assistance. The sociological explanation of domestic violence stresses the importance of patriarchal ideals and practices, emphasizing masculine power, and the need for control. The alternative explanation also emphasizes social traits that have effects on violence on both men and women (ScienceDirect, 2020). This assignment will examine how and why sociological imagination helps to understand domestic violence. Social Imagination Social imagination is the ability to see the relationship between individual experience and the larger society (Mills, 1959b). Social imagination is the sociological reasoning of the ability to see the relationship between society and individuals' experience. This type of awareness enables us to understand the link between social and personal influences (Kendall, 2018). Our personal problems that affects people around us, when we address domestic violence, we should focus on addressing the problem at a personal level. Often the problem is the abuser is trying to gain control due to a cultural difference, religious beliefs, low educational opportunities etc. Stress is another factor that plays a role in domestic violence, sometime when someone in the lose their job, the ones that are working tend to be more stress and can cause arguments that can lead to domestic violence related problems. The abuser will choose domestic violence since they feel they are in control and domination is necessary in they relationships. If the wrongdoer thinks the risks is greater than the satisfaction, he or she may choose not to commit the abuse, the lack of education does play a big role into this problem. Why Social Imagination Helps Understand Domestic Violence Sociology helps us to make better decisions and a better approach when dealing with social problems. Additionally, according to our textbook, social imagination helps examine private acts, like suicide in society. According to Kendall, D.E. states that “sociologists strive to use scientific standards, not popular myths, or hearsay, in studying society and social interaction. They use systematic research techniques and are accountable to the scientific community for their methods and the presentation of their findings.” Kendall, D.E. (2018). Summary Although, social-class pressures promote rates of suicide among young people from poorer district, knowing that employment opportunities and little hope for the future. However, class-based inequality alone cannot explain suicides among young people. (Kendall, 2018). Conclusion The sociological explanation of domestic violence stresses the importance of patriarchal ideals and practices, emphasizing masculine power, and the need for control. The alternative explanation also emphasizes social traits that have effects on violence on both men and women (ScienceDirect, 2020). This assignment will examine how and why sociological imagination helps to understand domestic violence. References: Kendall, D.E. (2018). Sociology in Our Times: The Essentials.
