Health policies guide the community and medical practitioners on the health and well-being of the public outlining targets and reference points with which to establish health care goals both short term and long term. The policies are also crucial in determining the roles of different participants in the community building consensus and enabling synergy. Health care policy encompasses the design and establishment of health insurance plans to allow local communities to afford efficient and quality medical care. As such, these policies are essential in ensuring proper training of medical practitioners, the safety of drugs and medical equipment’s, administration of public medical programs and promotion of community health care. Health care policy has a significant influence on the nursing profession. It can mean the difference between one getting healthcare or not. The policies affect the kind of medical care the community has access to, the cost of prescription drugs and above all the environment within which a nurse works[Joy08]. Health policy affects how and where nurses administer healthcare, for example, a heathcare system that requires nurses to practice only under the supervision of a physician may be a barrier preventing access to medical care when a physician is not around. The nurse will therefore not be able to diagnose, treat and prescribe medicine to their patients. Such restricting policies hamper access to health care in communities. Nurses are a critical part of the medical system, and their input in policy making should be valued. As such, they need to be vocal to influence the formulation of these policies rather than merely implementing them. Therefore, nurses need to participate and advocate for changes that address the professional challenges they face. Identification of selected healthcare policy concern Residing in the state of Florida, opoid overdoses has risen from 2015-2016 by 46.3%, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. I have selected this healthcare concern and advocate for change to an elected official due to the risig epidemic. According to the Health Care News, the state of Florida has the 11th highest rate of drug overdose deaths in the country, the Orlando Sentinel reports, at 16.4 deaths per 100,000. Pennsylvania and Florida saw massive increases in overdose deaths — 83 percent and 85 percent, respectively — in the two years compared. According to Swisher (2018), drug manufacturers and distributors are the primary perpetrators of the opioid crisis. Specifically, firms, such as Purdue Pharma and Janssen Pharmaceuticals overlook the risk of pain medications like OxyContin and Percocet, which promote opioid crisis in Florida. For example, pregnant women that use these drugs give birth to babies addicted to opioids. Swisher (2018) indicates that Florida has more than 95 percent of the top 100 opioid-prescribing doctors in the United States. The high presence of the physicians suggests that the elected members in the area need to prioritize the health concern to protect the population. The vulneralbe community to opiod addition is teenagers and young adults states Kolodny et al. (2015) since they use the drugs for nonmedical reasons, adults between the ages of 45 and 65 over use the medication, which leads to overdose deaths.
