Document Content and Description Below

Raising the Bar for Success First Semester Comfort – What is the definition of comfort? State of physical ease - Describe how pain is a subjective, physical and psychosocial experience. -Subje... ctive: Pain is determined by the pt -Physical: pain cannot be quantified by others, but noxious stimuli and nociceptive responses can be quantified. Wounds can be visually seen, but not the pain experienced. -Psychosocial: marital status, support, home and work environment, can affect pain. Someone in great stress due to family life may have a lower threshold for pain. -What is the difference between younger and older patients when reporting pain? - Health status is impaired to a lesser degree in older than in younger adults -Younger are able to recover from pain quicker so may not report, as in older adults may experience long lasting chronic pain. - Describe the differences between acute and chronic pain? Acute-sudden, short lived ex: injury, post op pain Chronic-long/may last a lifetime, ex: cancer, osteoarthritis - How does chronic pain relate to a patient’s lifestyle? - Pain, when it is ongoing and uncontrolled, has a detrimental, deteriorative effect on virtually every aspect of a patient's life. It produces anxiety and emotional distress; undermines well-being; interferes with functional capacity; and hinders the ability to fulfill family, social, and vocational roles. -Those with active lifestyles that now have osteoarthritis might now be affected with chronic pain, thus debilitating their hobbies and quality of life -some pains can be caused e.g smokers, who have chosen this lifestyle and not is affecting them with chronic pain. - How does peripheral neuropathy affect pain management and nursing care? -peripheral neuropathy affects pain management, because they pt’s do not have sensation in their peripheral and may not know they are in pain because they can not feel it. -treat the cause -depending on what caused this -control blood sugar -limit alcohol -vitamin -quit smoking -exercises This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-14-2022 00:55:51 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/79018612/Raising-the-Bar-Comfort-REV-SP20docx/ - What happens to a patient who has unrelieved pain? -can result in a patient limiting the movement of the thoracic and abdominal muscles in a bid to reduce pain. This may cause some degree of respiratory dysfunction with secretions and sputum being retained because of a reluctance to cough. -Pain produces a physiological stress response that includes increased heart and breathing rates to facilitate the increasing demands of oxygen and other nutrients to vital organs. Failure to relieve pain produces a prolonged stress state, which can result in harmful multisystem effects. - How is the Endocrine system affected when pain is present? - effect of pain on the endocrine system is one of severe stress. Pain initially stimulates the HPATG system to produce and secrete extra hormones from the adrenals, gonads, and thyroid - During times of stress, the hypothalamus, a collection of nuclei that connects the brain and the endocrine system, signals the pituitary gland to produce a hormone, which in turn signals the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, to increase the production of cortisol. - The pituitary also secretes endorphins chemicals that act on the nervous system and reduce feelings of pain - What is a basic nursing measure to provide comfort to a patient with pain? • Assisting the person to assume a comfortable position. • Repositioning the patient when needed to relieve pain and muscle spasms. • Using pillows and props to support the affected body parts. • Changing the angle of the bed to relieve tension on surgical sites and other painful or injured areas. • Avoid sudden, jerking movements when moving or positioning the patient. • Providing extra pillows and blankets for comfort and support. • Timing patient care to coincide with pain medication and waiting at least 30 minutes after the nurse administers pain medication before moving the patient, performing procedures, or undertaking activities. • Giving a backrub. • Placing a cool, damp washcloth on the patient's forehead. • Playing soft music to distract the patient. • Listening to patients' concerns and emotional support. • Maintaining a comfortable environmental temperature. • Providing a quiet, dark environment. - What is the goal of pain management? The goal is to gradually increase function without exceeding limits of pain and discomfort. Goal to live pain-free, and maximize a pt’s quality of life - How is pain relief determined? -assess/ask patient -use of pain scale This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-14-2022 00:55:51 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/79018612/Raising-the-Bar-Comfort-REV-SP20docx/ - What does the nurse need to ask when performing a pain evaluation? Pain pattern -onset? -duration? -continuous, constant, brief? -Activity that causes pain? Location -site -projected, radiating, referred? Intensity -severity -use pain scale Quality -words client uses -physical signs for nonverbal clients What brings relief? What makes it worse? Impact on quality of life and function Pt’s beliefs, expectations goals - What non-pharmacologic strategies are available for pain management? Mind-body therapy Relaxation Distraction Music therapy Art, dance Meditation, prayer Guided imagery Biologically based therapy Herbal Dietary supps.
